Tewksbury Foot Bassets
Sunday presentation in the Show Jump Arena followed by a chance to interact with these playful trackers.
The Tewksbury Foot Bassets was founded by H. Fales, II and J.S. Jones in 1950 and reorganized on a subscription basis in 1953 to hunt European Brown Hare and Kansas Jackrabbits. The Bassets are successors to Mr. R.V.N. Gambrills private pack, the Vernon Somerset Beagles, which had been providing excellent sport since 1915. Mr. Gambrills’s hounds were in their turn successors to those of Mr. George B. Post of Bernardsville, who founded the sport of hare hunting in this area with his Somerset Beagles in 1888. Mr. E.W. Clucas’ White Oaks Foot Beagles hunted portions of the country from 1916 to 1945, and Mr. John Cowperthwaite’s Readington Foot Beagles hunted “the Neshanic Country” from about 1938 until World War II. Today the country is hunted with the kind permission of landowners and tenants in the area where Somerset, Morris and Hunterdon counties come together, as well as on various public land in New Jersey.
